GE Ice Maker Not Cooling Enough: What We Found

The customer called because the ice maker wasn't working. What we found was simpler than a failed ice maker: the fresh food compartment wasn't holding temperature properly, and that was the reason ice production had stopped. On these GE units, a fan circulates cold air from the evaporator coil through the compartment. When that fan slows down or quits, the compartment can't pull temperature down the way it should, and the ice maker stops making ice even though nothing is wrong with the ice maker components themselves.

The fix was a fan replacement in the fresh food compartment. This fan moves air across the evaporator coil and pushes it through the compartment. When it's weak or dead, air stops circulating the way it should, even if the compressor and other components are working fine. Once the new fan was in, the compartment started pulling temperature normally again and the ice maker went back to producing ice on its own — no work needed on the ice maker itself.

The customer had been dealing with the ice maker acting up before this visit, which lined up with what we found. Cooling and ice production are connected on this model. When the fresh food side isn't getting proper airflow, the ice maker will act up or stop entirely even if there's nothing wrong with it. Fixing the airflow resolved both, because airflow was the root cause — not the ice maker.
