What a LG refrigerator is like to work on
Every LG refrigerator conversation starts in the same place, and it should. The linear compressor is the most litigated component in the industry — a class-action settlement in 2020 covered certain 2014–2017 units after a wave of failures, and LG warrants it for ten years through their own network. So the first job on an LG that has stopped cooling is not diagnosis, it is establishing whose repair this is.
Model lines we service
What we open one for
Nothing cold in either compartment
The linear compressor or the inverter board that drives it. They present identically and are very different repairs — the board is not sealed-system work and is far smaller. Call LG before anyone independent, ourselves included: an independent repair to the sealed system ends coverage you may still have.
One compartment drifting warm with a fan fault reported
Ice around a fan blade, which puts the real fault in the defrost circuit rather than the fan. The code says which fan, which is genuinely useful — it narrows the job before the back panel comes off.
Craft Ice producing nothing while the regular ice maker works
The round-ice mould has its own assembly and its own failure mode. Establishing which of the two ice systems is out matters before any part is ordered.
Ice maker output falling off slowly
The fill tube icing shut, or the ice maker fan. On door-mounted systems the supply runs a long way through a cold path, and that path is usually where this lives.
Is there a code on the display?
We have written out what each LG code reports, what causes it, and whether it needs anybody at all — several of them are not faults.
LG error codesParts and what they cost
Everything outside the sealed system is well supplied — inverter boards, fans, ice maker assemblies, gaskets. Compressors are usually a warranty conversation rather than a parts one.
Most refrigerator jobs land between $150 and $450, parts included, and the $150 minimum service call is part of that rather than on top of it.
When to call LG instead of us
LG warrants the linear compressor for ten years on most refrigerators — the part, through their own service network. If your fridge has stopped cooling, call LG before you call us. Certain 2014–2017 models were also covered by a class-action settlement with extended terms; if yours is that vintage it is worth checking whether you are inside it. We will not fit a compressor into a machine that still has coverage on it, and we will say so on the phone rather than after arriving.
Answered
- My LG stopped cooling. Is it the compressor everyone talks about?
- It might be, and it might be the inverter board, which costs a fraction. Establish the warranty position first: ten years on the compressor through LG, and certain 2014–2017 models had extended terms on top. Get their answer, then come to us if there is a bill worth a second opinion.
- Is it worth repairing an LG refrigerator out of warranty?
- Outside the sealed system, yes — these are well built and the parts are available. Inside it, on a unit past eight years, we put the repair figure next to a replacement figure and say which we would spend.
